Street Survival Tactics

Welcome back Street Survivors

Rick “Pirate Hunter” Grover

Thanks for your continued readership of this column over the past decade, and the email questions and kind comments you’ve sent in. Today’s column is critically important to both saving your life and preserving your finances, when medically airlifted.

Through the years, I’ve tried to focus on education and skill development for you and your family or inner circle. We’ve even discussed how to continue the fight if you are injured during a home invasion or national emergency. The question of the day is what happens during an emergency when you are completely out of commission physically, or even unconscious?

AirMedCare Network’s Regional One is our local rescue helicopter medical team that is dispatched by 911 when time is critical to save a life or limb. The company was started in 1976 with just one helicopter, and despite market conditions and multiple recessions, has continued to grow to today’s strength of 320 helicopters and jets providing emergency services to 38 states, making them the largest air medical membership organization in the country. Each aircraft is outfitted as a flying ICU (Intensive Care Unit), with a flight team of three professionals. The highly skilled pilots typically come from a military background, which may include flying both rotary and fixed wing aircraft. The very experienced flight paramedics and nurses are some of the very best trained in the country, and work in unison to keep the patient alive during the flight while communicating with the Trauma-1 or Trauma-2 hospital staff preparing for their arrival. The entire team is outfitted with military grade night vision, and this combination of experience and state-of-the-art equipment truly represents the best thing that can happen to you on the worst day of your life !

“It Won’t Happen to Me”, is a common response when this discussion comes up, but last year just in Spartanburg County, Regional One fielded over 300 emergency calls! Cherokee County had over 500! I’m sure none of those people woke up in the morning and wondered if they’d take a medical life-flight that day. We never think it will happen to us, but it does, and true to our Street Survivor mentality, we should prepare for it, like any other unexpected but possible scenario.

As you’d expect, maintaining this level of talent in a constant state of readiness 365 days of the year, 24/7 is very costly. Oftentimes, people tell me their insurance will cover the cost of the flight which is beyond wishful thinking. Try calling your insurance company and asking them what they’ll cover, and while you’re at it, ask them to guarantee they won’t try to reduce, modify or even completely deny your claim. AirMedCare Network came up with a solution in 1985 to help families deal with the rising costs of medical care and air ambulance services.

If you could buy a very low-cost membership that would protect everyone that lives in your home, no matter if they’re a relative, friend or even someone renting a room from you, which would guarantee no out-of-pocket costs for your life-flight, after the insurance pays their portion, wouldn’t you jump right on that? As a member, there are no deductibles, no limits on how many life-flights you can take, no restrictions on pre-existing conditions, in fact you don’t even need to have medical insurance at all to buy a membership with AirMedCare Network! Members face zero out of pocket expenses when flown by one of the network’s providers, including Regional One.

OK, I know you’re asking how much this terrific benefit would be, and that’s the best part of it. Because we have over 3 million members across the country, we keep the membership costs very low. For just $85 you can protect your entire household for a year, whether you live alone or have 7 people living in your home! If you are age 60 or more, the price drops to $65 for the year. We also sell 3, 5- and 10-year memberships which further drops the cost/year and locks in your rate. We just want you protected, and this membership makes 100% common sense. AirMedCare Network does emergency response calls, emergent hospital transfers if you need to go to a specialty hospital, and even patient transfers for organ transplants. If you travel a lot for business or vacation, this membership travels with you and there’s a good chance we have coverage where you’re going.

I’m proud to join AirMedCare Network as a Membership Sales Manager for 10 counties in both SC and NC, and want you to know we have 7 helicopters and a jet servicing South Carolina. Please consider buying a membership, even though we hope you never take a single flight, be prepared!
