After 5 weeks of disrupting traffic to the south side of Fountain Inn, the Highway 418 bridge resurfacing project has been completed. “We were awarded the contract and construction began in the first part of May.”, said Chris Myles owner of Extreme Concrete Cutting of Gaffney South Carolina. We were under a five week projection and we’re finishing on time.”
The bridge was closed in May in order for the contractor to mill down one and half inches of the old concrete surface and apply a new latex/concrete surface 2 inches thick. Some other minor adjustments were also made to the bridge’s safety barriers. The South Carolina DOT did the tie-ins on either side of the bridge. The cost of the contract was $244,000.
According to sources, “during the five weeks that the bridge has been closed several businesses along the 418 corridor suffered a slowdown in volume but are very happy the bridge is now open. Communication between SCDOT, city officials, Chamber of Commerce, residents and businesses could have been better.”♦
