“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to the best of my ability preserve protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”.
Those words have been spoken and pledged by 44 men who have been entrusted with the duties of the office of the President of the United States. The office of president of the United States of America is one of the great political offices in the world today.
The person who occupies that office holds more power than any other leader in the democratic world.
The institution of chief executive of the nation was born over 200 years ago out of the need to create a political system in the wake of the American Revolution by calling us to preserve their freedoms in the face of transgressions by Britain’s Monarch George III. The Constitutional Convention of 1787 lasted four months and within that short time was created the framework for the government of the United States – the Constitution – which has lasted until the present: the legislature, the courts, the system of checks and balances and of course the office of president.
On November 3, 2020 our country will be voting for President of the United States along with several other federal and state offices. None is more important than the presidency. Within these pages The Sentinel is recognizing all the men who have served as President of the United States.
A short summary of their administration and a photograph of each president is included.
Our goal is to place in the hands of our readers a celebration of the presidents and the presidency and to encourage both young and old to appreciate our form of government and its leaders.
I hope we have accomplished that goal.
