The Christmas Rose, Helleborus niger, is preparing to bloom when other perennials are going to sleep for the winter. This one has large, white, cup like flowers with yellow stamens. It is not bothered by the cold, ice or snow of winter.
The plant has evergreen heavily lobed dark green leaves and grows 8-15 inches high. The flowers have a long bloom time, usually from late December to March.
If you prefer more color in your garden, choose the sister plant to the Christmas Rose, Helleborus orientalis. Orientalis blooms in red, pink, yellow and deep purple. These grow a bit taller but both tolerate a partly shaded spot in your garden. It is best to trim some of the old, tattered leave to reveal new growth leaves and easily view the flowers. ♦
